Agra Travel Guide for International Tourists (2026)
Table of Contents
This Agra travel guide covers everything you need for a first visit — Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, food, and how to pay. And yes, it lives up to the hype — no photo prepares you for the scale, the symmetry, and the way the marble changes colour from pink at dawn to white at midday to golden at sunset. It’s one of those rare monuments that actually exceeds expectations.
But Agra has more than the Taj. The Agra Fort is a Mughal palace complex that rivals anything in Delhi. Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km away, is an eerily beautiful abandoned city. And the local food — particularly the petha (crystallised pumpkin sweet) and the Mughlai cuisine — is worth the trip on its own. Most tourists rush through Agra in a few hours. Give it a full day or, better, an overnight.

Agra Travel Guide: What to See
Taj Mahal
No introduction needed. Entry: ₹1,100 for foreigners (includes ₹200 for the main mausoleum interior). Open sunrise to sunset, closed Fridays. Sunrise is the least crowded and most magical time — arrive 30 minutes before the gates open. Budget 2–3 hours. Enter from the East Gate (shortest queue) or the West Gate. UPI accepted at the ticket counter.
Tips: Hire an ASI-approved guide at the gate (₹500–800 for a 1-hour tour). Bring a power bank — your phone is your camera and your wallet. Tripods and drones are banned. Leave large bags at the cloakroom (free).
Agra Fort
A massive red sandstone and white marble fortress just 2.5 km from the Taj. The Mughal emperors ruled from here for generations. Shah Jahan’s tower where he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb offers a distant view of the Taj. Entry: ₹600 (foreigner). Budget 1.5–2 hours. UPI accepted.
Mehtab Bagh
A garden across the Yamuna River from the Taj, offering the classic reflection view. Best at sunset. Entry: ₹300 (foreigner). The viewpoint here is less crowded than from the Taj grounds. 30–45 minutes.
Fatehpur Sikri
An abandoned Mughal capital 40 km from Agra. Built by Emperor Akbar in the 1570s and deserted after just 14 years (possibly due to water shortage). The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) is the highest gateway in the world. Entry: ₹600 (foreigner). Half-day trip. UPI at the ticket counter.
Itimad-ud-Daulah
Often called the “Baby Taj” — a smaller, intricate Mughal tomb that predates the Taj Mahal and is considered its architectural precursor. Entry: ₹110 (foreigner). Quieter and less crowded. 45 minutes.
Where to Eat in Agra
See Where to Eat in Agra. Highlights: petha at Panchhi Petha (Agra’s signature sweet, ₹100–300 per box), Mughlai food at Pinch of Spice (₹300–600), and rooftop dining with Taj views at Oberoi Amarvilas or Taj Terrace (₹2,000–5,000).
Money & Payments in Agra
Taj Mahal ticket counter accepts UPI. Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, and most restaurants accept UPI. The tourist shops around the Taj are split between UPI and cash. Cycle-rickshaws near the Taj area are cash-only.
Recommendation: Mony as primary. ₹2,000–3,000 cash for cycle-rickshaws, tips, and guides.
Scams to Watch For
Agra has India’s highest concentration of tourist scams. “Friendly locals” who steer you to marble inlay shops (overpriced), “official guides” who aren’t official, and auto-rickshaw drivers who quote 10x the normal fare. Use Uber/Ola, buy tickets at official counters only, and hire guides from the ASI booth at the gate.
