Somewhere along the journey, just as you begin to feel the shift in altitude and air, Umiam Lake appears like a painting\u2014vast, still, and luminous, framed by pine-covered hills. It\u2019s the kind of view that makes you instinctively reach for your phone, but also stop mid-motion, unwilling to interrupt the stillness. Just off this lake, almost hidden among tall trees and landscaped gardens, lies <a href=\"https:\/\/rikynjai.com\/\"><strong>Ri Kynjai<\/strong>\u2014serenity by the lake<\/a>\u2014 a resort whose very name feels like a promise.<\/p>\n\n<p>As I passed through the stone gates, I could feel that I was leaving the noise and chaos of the city fading out. The path meandered through manicured lawn and flower beds bursting with colour. The main building, with its high wooden ceiling, handwoven furnishings, and signature Khasi-style pointed roofs, welcomed us with quiet grandeur. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and a refreshing drink\u2014made with locally harvested honey and the famous Meghalaya ginger\u2014and the check-in was quick and gracious.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had taken the Superior Lake View Cottage and it felt like an extension of the landscape. Polished wooden floors, bamboo lampshades and window accents, and soft lighting created a cocoon of comfort. The large glass French windows opened onto a private balcony that looked straight out over the waters of Umiam Lake. The lake shimmered as though nature had strewn thousands of gemstones on its surface, while a gentle breeze carried the scent of pine and coal fires, a scent I will forever associate with Meghalaya. I sat there for a long time savouring the silence and doing absolutely nothing, which, I realised, is exactly what this place invites you to do.<\/p>\n\n<p>Later, I dined in their in-house restaurant, Sao Aiom. The menu was an ode to Khasi cuisine\u2014earthy, flavourful, and rooted in the land. I tried <strong>jadoh<\/strong> (spiced rice and meat), <strong>dohneiiong<\/strong> (meat in black sesame paste), and a delicate soup made with local herbs and mushrooms. Everything was served with care and precision, with a short explanation from the staff, who clearly take pride in their culinary heritage.<\/p>\n\n<p>The next day, I booked a massage at the spa, tucked away in a quiet corner of the resort.
