Bengali cuisine is India&#8217;s most underappreciated regional food tradition, and Kolkata is where to experience it.<\/p><h2>Street Food Essentials<\/h2><h3>Kathi Rolls: Kolkata&#8217;s Most Famous Street Food<\/h3><p><strong>Nizam&#8217;s<\/strong> \u2014 New Market. Where the kathi roll was born in 1932. Specifically, it&#8217;s an egg-mutton, chicken, or paneer filling wrapped in a flaky paratha. \u20b960\u2013120. Open until late. Cash and UPI.<\/p><p><strong>Hot Kati Rolls<\/strong> \u2014 Park Street. A modern take on the classic, with more variety and a late-night crowd. \u20b980\u2013150. UPI accepted.<\/p><h3>Phuchka (Pani Puri)<\/h3><p>Kolkata&#8217;s version is tangier and spicier than anywhere else. In addition, the tamarind water is sharper and the filling more generous. The best stalls are roadside \u2014 look for queues near Vivekananda Park or Gariahat. \u20b920\u201340 per plate. Cash.<\/p><h3>Fish Fry<\/h3><p>Crumbed and fried bhetki fish \u2014 a Kolkata original. Furthermore, it&#8217;s found at most Park Street restaurants and street stalls alike. \u20b980\u2013150 at stalls, \u20b9200\u2013400 at restaurants.<\/p><h2>Bengali Sweets<\/h2><p>This is Kolkata&#8217;s obsession. Moreover, the city has more sweet shops than restaurants, and the craft is taken deadly seriously.<\/p><p><strong>Rosogolla<\/strong> \u2014 Spongy balls of chhena (fresh cheese) in sugar syrup. K.C. Das claims to have invented it. \u20b920\u201340 per piece.<\/p><p><strong>Mishti doi<\/strong> \u2014 Sweetened yoghurt set in clay pots. Simple and extraordinary. \u20b930\u201360.<\/p><p><strong>Sandesh<\/strong> \u2014 Moulded sweets made from chhena and sugar, sometimes flavoured with saffron, pistachio, or date palm jaggery (nolen gur). \u20b925\u201360 per piece. Balaram Mullick and Nalin Chandra Das are the top names.<\/p><p><strong>Nolen gur specials (winter only)<\/strong> \u2014 December\u2013February, Kolkata goes mad for date palm jaggery. Nolen gur sandesh, rosogolla, and payesh appear everywhere. Seasonal and unmissable.<\/p><h2>Where to Eat in Kolkata: Restaurants by Budget<\/h2><h3>Budget: Under \u20b9400<\/h3><p><strong>Arsalan<\/strong> \u2014 Park Circus.
