The French colonial quarter \u2014 known as White Town \u2014 has pastel-coloured villas, bougainvillea-draped walls, bakeries selling croissants, and street signs in both Tamil and French. Narrow streets with colonial villas, art galleries, bookshops, and cafes. Rue Suffren, Rue Romain Rolland, and Rue Dumas are the prettiest streets. Entirely walkable. Free. Budget 2\u20133 hours of wandering.<\/p>\n<h3>Promenade Beach<\/h3>\n<p>A 1.5 km waterfront boulevard along the Bay of Bengal. No swimming (rocky), but excellent for morning and evening walks. The Gandhi statue, war memorial, and colourful boats make it photogenic. Free.<\/p>\n<h3>Auroville<\/h3>\n<p>An international &#8220;universal town&#8221; founded in 1968 based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The Matrimandir (golden meditation sphere) is the centrepiece. Visitor centre is free; Matrimandir viewing requires advance booking (free, 30-min inner chamber sessions available). 12 km from Pondy. Budget a half day.<\/p>\n<h3>Sri Aurobindo Ashram<\/h3>\n<p>A spiritual community in the heart of White Town. The meditation hall and samadhi (memorial shrine) are open to visitors. Peaceful and genuinely calming. Free. 30\u201345 minutes.<\/p>\n<h3>Paradise Beach<\/h3>\n<p>A ferry ride across the backwater to a clean, quiet beach. \u20b9200\u2013300 return ferry. Good for a half-day escape. Bring your own food and water.<\/p>\n<h3>Serenity Beach<\/h3>\n<p>3 km north. The surf beach \u2014 lessons available (\u20b91,500\u20132,500 for 1.5 hours). Also home to a weekend bazaar with artisan vendors.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Where to Eat<\/h2>\n<p>See <strong>Where to Eat in Pondicherry<\/strong>. Highlights: croissants at Baker Street (\u20b950\u2013100), French-Tamil fusion at Villa Shanti (\u20b9600\u20131,000), wood-fired pizza at Tanto (\u20b9400\u2013600), and traditional Tamil food at Surguru (\u20b980\u2013180).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Money &amp; Payments<\/h2>\n<p>White Town cafes and restaurants accept UPI. Auroville&#8217;s visitor centre and some shops use their own currency (Aurocard) but increasingly accept UPI too.
