1-Day Agra Itinerary: Taj Mahal, Fort & Mughal Heritage
Table of Contents
This 1-day Agra itinerary covers the city from sunrise to sunset — and covers it well. The key is starting at sunrise for the Taj Mahal (least crowded, best light), then working through the other Mughal monuments, and finishing with the Taj reflected in the Yamuna from Mehtab Bagh at sunset.
Total estimated cost: ₹3,500–6,000 per person (the Taj entry alone is ₹1,100 for foreigners).
The Itinerary
5:30 AM — Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Arrive 30 minutes before the gates open. Enter from the East Gate for shorter queues. Watch the marble change colour as the sun rises. Budget 2.5–3 hours inside. Hire an ASI guide at the gate (₹500–800) for the first hour.
Cost: ₹1,100 entry + ₹500–800 guide | Payment: UPI at ticket counter
9:00 AM — Breakfast
Bedai and jalebi from a Sadar Bazaar stall (₹50–80) or Sheroes Hangout café (a social enterprise run by acid attack survivors, ₹100–200). Both are near the Taj area.
10:00 AM — Agra Fort
2.5 km from the Taj. The Mughal palace-fortress is massive and impressive. Don’t miss the Musamman Burj tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned and gazed at the Taj. 1.5–2 hours.
Cost: ₹600 (foreigner) | Payment: UPI
12:30 PM — Lunch at Pinch of Spice
Fatehabad Road. Reliable North Indian and Mughlai. ₹300–600. UPI/cards.
2:00 PM — Itimad-ud-Daulah
The “Baby Taj” across the river. Smaller, more intricate, and almost tourist-free. The marble inlay work here actually surpasses the Taj’s in detail. 45 minutes.
Cost: ₹110 (foreigner) | Payment: UPI
3:30 PM — Petha Shopping at Panchhi Petha
Agra’s signature sweet. Buy a box of assorted flavours. ₹100–300. UPI.
4:30 PM — Mehtab Bagh at Sunset
Cross the river to the garden directly opposite the Taj. The classic “reflection” photo of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna is taken here. Less crowded than the Taj itself at sunset. 45 minutes–1 hour.
Cost: ₹300 (foreigner) | Payment: UPI
6:30 PM — Dinner
Taj Terrace rooftop for the last Taj view of the day (₹300–500) or Mama Chicken for local tandoori (₹150–300).
